Tudor Suite, the Gore Hotel London
Our Tudor Suite was originally part of what was once known as the Elizabethan Rooms, a three-room suite which opened in 1953 amid the Tudor Revival fascination of the mid-19th century.
In its heyday, extravagant feasts and parties hosting 400 people a night filled the rooms in an atmosphere redolent of the 16th century. A vast refectory table would stand in the centre of the room, groaning with roasted meats, pies and overflowing jugs of mead. In a time of celebration, marked by the post-war spirit and the jubilant coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the decadent concept took London by storm.
What is now the Tudor Suite, the last remaining room of the original three, features the original minstrels’ gallery, once filled with musicians plucking their lutes, along with a high oak-beamed ceiling. A grand Portland stone fireplace, now a working gas fireplace, was built for roaring log fires to warm the feasting revellers during their evenings of indulgence.
With a sumptuous mahogany four-poster bed, lavish furnishings, and stained-glass windows that echo the heritage of the period, the Tudor Suite exudes a unique historical charm, serving as a gateway to a bygone era.
